Vondrousova completely overpowered Osaka in the first set. The Japanese could only keep her serve game once and was awarded a 6-1. There was more balance in the second set. Both players quickly lost their serve once. After that it went evenly to 5-4. Osaka had to serve to stay in the game, but that didn’t work. The third match point turned out to be good for Vondrousova.

The match between Vondrousova and Osaka could be finished under a closed roof without any problems. Due to the heavy rainfall, the duel between Alison Van Uytvanck (WTA 59) and the Spanish Garbine Muguruza (WTA 9) was interrupted.

Osaka had a turbulent run-up to the Olympics. She still won the Australian Open in February, but due to mental difficulties she forfeited her second round at Roland Garros. After that, she did not participate in Wimbledon. In Tokyo she celebrated her comeback with simple victories against the Chinese Saisai Zheng (WTA 52) and the Swiss Viktorija Golubic (WTA 49). The Czech Vondrousova turned out to be a size too big.
