“Being important, on and off the field”, that’s what Lior Refaelov wants to be. But preferably on it, and that worked out against Laçi tonight. Refaelov had a foot in the three goals, which makes it all the more remarkable that against Union and Eupen he was only a substitute for Anderlecht.

“I respect the decisions of the staff,” Refaelov said. “We have a lot of good players in the attacking compartment, you have to make decisions, there will be rotation. I know I won’t play everything, but I’d like to play as much as possible. If I don’t want to do that anymore, I’d better stop.”

He did not dare to answer whether Refaelov could start the match against Seraing on Sunday. Vincent Kompany did, with a wink. “I am no dumber than anyone else, I see what you see. This kind of performance just makes my job easier. I know Refaelov’s impact on my team is undeniable, but for me it was understandable why he didn’t play everything in the previous matches. He missed the play-offs last season, we have to watch out for injuries.”

Refaelov called the 0-3 win “important for confidence”. “We know that results are expected time and again at Anderlecht. That was crucial at this stage of the tournament. We wanted to secure qualifying here, I think we took a step in the right direction. For me personally it is nice that we score twice on stationary phases: we work hard on that.”

Kompany was also satisfied, “although we could have scored one or two more goals.” Joshua Zirkzee’s miss was then discussed. “That was a great opportunity,” Kompany nodded, without dramatizing: “Let’s not forget that he still has to settle in.”

There won’t be much time for that in the coming days: Seraing is already waiting on Sunday. “We can’t afford not to win in the league three times in a row,” said Refaelov. “That creates pressure, but we are all paid well to deal with that.”

If Rafa can maintain his level, then it will not be up to him…
