Will the marriage between Peter Sagan and BORA-hansgrohe end after this season? The 31-year-old Slovak has ended his contract and an extension does not seem to be immediate. Team manager Ralph Denk doubts whether Sagan is still worth his multi-million dollar contract and even said that the three-time world champion “is slowly entering the autumn of his career”. Sagan himself responded in an interview with Cyclingnews: “I don’t feel old yet.”
Peter Sagan and BORA-hansgrohe have been linked since 2017. Partly thanks to the arrival of the Slovak, the German formation made the leap to the WorldTour as a small team. Sagan is said to earn 5 million euros annually, but in recent years the star of the former world champion has faded. After this season Sagan ends his contract, which automatically raises the question: will he stay or will he not stay?
Team manager Ralph Denk said this week in an interview with the German newspaper Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger that he cannot yet give a conclusive answer to that question. “We are grateful to Sagan for what he has done for us, the sponsors have received a lot of attention thanks to him. But Peter is gradually arriving in the fall of his career. Moreover, he is one of the highest paid riders in the peloton. We have to consider whether we still want to pay for it. Or is it better to invest in younger riders? ”
Sagan himself responded in an interview with Cyclingnews to the statements of his employer. “I don’t know if Ralph said exactly what appeared in the media, I haven’t read it. Sometimes a statement is taken out of context. To be honest, I don’t feel old yet and I don’t feel like I’m in the fall of my career. I have proven that I can still win, even if my spring was disrupted by Covid-19. ”
The former winner of the Tour and Paris-Roubaix, among others, indicated that he had not yet spoken to Denk about a new contract, to which he added: “I had a great time at BORA-hansgrohe, but when Denk sees me over my top , that’s his opinion. If he thinks he no longer needs me to win races for the team, I’ll be the first to find a team that really wants me. ”
About the Ronde: “Sanremo gives me hope for Sunday”
Regarding his chances in next Sunday’s Tour of Flanders, Sagan remained flat in the same interview. “I feel good, but I am not at my best. I have therefore not been on the bike for three weeks. De Ronde always shows who is the best, there is no way around that. There are three big favorites plus a bunch of others. But we have a chance, otherwise we wouldn’t be in Belgium. In Sanremo someone other than the ‘Big Three’ also won. That gives me hope for Sunday. ”
