No Nina Derwael (21) at the European Gymnastics Championships in Basel, Switzerland, at the end of this month. The gymnast is struggling with a foot injury, Gymfed announced. It is not an ideal preparation for the Olympic Games.

“Due to a minor foot injury that Nina had to contend with in recent weeks, she has not been able to prepare optimally for this European Championship. As a result, this competition is no longer included in its program ”, the organization states.

“It is a pity to miss this European Championship, but in view of the Olympic Games this is the best decision,” says the two-time world and European champion at the bridge with uneven bars.

Derwael must become one of the spearheads of Team Belgium at the Olympic Games in Tokyo (23 July – 8 August). The Limburgian is replaced in the selection by Jutta Verkest. Just like the three other selected candidates (Margaux Daveloose, Fien Enghels and Noémie Louon) she will come into action all round.

After the qualifications on April 21, the women’s all-round final (for the top 24) will follow on April 23. The next day the equipment finals (with eight) are scheduled for the jump and the bridge, on April 25 it will be the turn of the beam and the ground.
