Skiffeur Ward Lemmelijn finished the Olympic qualifying regatta in Varese, Italy, in thirteenth place. The 23-year-old Lemmelijn won the C-final.
Lemmelijn, who completed his first international competition in the open air, finished fifth and last in the second qualifying series on Monday. Only the first three rowers received a ticket for the semi-finals, which meant that the indoor world champion had to go to the rematches. But here too it was not possible to push through, with the result that he was referred to the C-final.
In the C-final, which after the forfait of the Est Johann Poolak consisted of only two rowers, Lemmelijn (7: 17.87) took it well ahead of the Moldovan Alexandr Bulat.
Lemmelijn may have the ultimate chance to grab a ticket for Tokyo during the last qualifying race in Lucerne, Switzerland (May 15-17). However, the main goal of our fellow countryman remains to participate in the 2024 Games in Paris.
