Gérard became unwell on Wednesday evening during a farewell moment for some Belgian athletes in the Paralympic village in Tokyo. The wheelchair tennis player was rushed to hospital. The first investigations indicated a cardiological problem. It was originally planned to fly directly from Tokyo to New York.

Gérard (ITF 3) took part in the Paralympic Games in Tokyo. He was eliminated in the third round of the singles by Spaniard Daniel Caverzaschi (ITF 14): 6-3 and 6-4. On the side of Jef Vandorpe, he lost in the third round of the doubles against the British top seed players Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid. They won 6-2 and 6-2. Gérard won the bronze medal in singles at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
