The incident happened during the descent of the Coll de Rabassa, a climb in Andorra. A van passed two cyclists in a bend who rode up the climb while De Buyst came from the other side. The resident of Ghent could no longer avoid the mirror of the car and hit it with his left shoulder full. The result: it became clear in a local hospital that the Lotto-Soudal rider suffered a rib fracture and possibly also a shoulder fracture. Further research in Belgium is yet to provide a definitive answer.

For De Buyst it is a new disappointment. In the Tour he lost his leader Caleb Ewan early on, after which he also gave up in the ninth stage. Now our compatriot got a new chance with the Vuelta to prove himself in a big round, but this accident now seems to put a stop to that.
