Butler filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday. He claims that the production companies ‘Nu Image’, ‘Millennium Media’ and ‘Padre Nuestro Productions’ have made tens of millions of dollars from Olympus, but refuse to pay him a cent of the gross profit. The film grossed more than 140 million euros at the box office of the cinema. It’s common in Hollywood for stars to receive a portion of that income, which in the case of a blockbuster could potentially be more than their salary.
Butler claims that Olympus producers never intended to give him his share of the profits. According to him, they “misrepresented the finances of the film” so that he would believe there was no money owed to him. The actor therefore filed a complaint for fraud and breach of contract and is claiming more than eight million euros in damages.
Scarlett Johansson is also suing Disney
‘Olympus Has Fallen’ follows a Secret Service agent (Butler) who must rescue the president from the beleaguered White House. The film spawned two sequels to date (“London Has Fallen” in 2016 and “Angel Has Fallen” in 2019). There would be more movies to come, Butler told EW in 2020. “I think you’ll see another one. We are toying with a fantastic idea that we are currently working on, but we can’t say too much about it yet.”
Butler’s lawsuit comes in the wake of news that Scarlett Johansson is suing Disney over the streaming release of ‘Black Widow’, alleging the studio breached its contract by releasing the film in theaters and on Disney+ simultaneously. .
