After two hours and sixteen minutes of tennis, the 6-4, 4-6 and 6-1 final score was on the board. It was the first mutual game between 25-year-old Mertens and 28-year-old Golubic. To advance to the semi-finals, Mertens has to pass the Czech Katerina Siniakova (WTA 69). He already won in three sets against the French Kristina Mladenovic (WTA 55) on Wednesday.

Belgium’s best tennis player won the three previous confrontations against Siniakova, one year younger. She beat her in Sydney, Doha and Wuhan in 2019.

Elise Mertens is also still active in the doubles tournament. She forms the first seed there with the Russian Veronika Kudermetova. Later today, in the second round, they will face Slovenian Dalila Jakupovic and Russian Yana Sizikova.

Mertens: “Dime on its side”

“It was a good match. I fought hard for the first two sets. They were a dime on its side ”, responded Mertens. “In the third set I tried to put more pressure forward and I succeeded. I am very happy with the way I played in the third set. ”

Mertens feels at home on the Turkish clay, she assured. “I like being here. I am now in the quarter finals, played two games on this court. Hopefully I can continue in this tournament because I feel good here. ”
