The riders will work in this 18th edition, with start and finish on the Minderbroedersstraat in Oudenaarde, 152.4 kilometers. The route was interspersed with thirteen slopes and numerous tough cobblestone zones. Van Vleuten was ultimately able to make a difference on the Paterberg. In the last 13 kilometers, she managed to keep a chasing group about 10 seconds behind her, but Van Vleuten did not allow herself to be caught up anymore.
Our compatriots Lotte Kopecky and Jolien D’hoore played no significant role in the absolute final. Lotte Kopecky started as one of the top favorites, but was unable to defend her chances due to material trouble. At the worst possible moment, just at the foot of the Oude Kwaremont, her chain came off.
Van Vleuten had already won Dwars door Vlaanderen on Wednesday. That was her first victory in the shirt of Movistar, her new Spanish employer. It was the second time that she was the best in the Tour of Flanders. That was Van Vleuten earlier in 2011.
