For years, the name of Thandiwe Newton (48) was written wrong, she says in British Vogue. But from now on she will go through life as Thandiwe again.
The actress tells how her name was misspelled in the credits of her first film, ‘Flirting’ from 1991. It said ‘Thandie’, instead of Thandiwe, as she is really called. Rather than contesting the error, she decided it was easier to stick with that shortened version.
But now she wants to change that – after thirty years. “That is my name. It has always been my name. I take back what is mine, “she says in British Vogue. The actress has a British white father and a Zimbabwean mother. Her full name is Melanie Thandiwe Newton.
In her career, she has seen the film landscape change seriously, she says, with more colored people in key roles. “What I am most grateful for in our current industry is that I am in the company of others who really see me. And that I am not complicit in the objectification of black people as ‘the others’. Because that happens when you are the only one. ”
